StoreBuilder: Quick & Easy No-Code Website Builder for Ecommerce
Over the last decade, the web hosting industry has grown exponentially. Service providers are continuously working on finding easier ways to create more complex websites for the ever more demanding audience. In the last two years, the situation became much more complicated than what the world was used to in terms of commerce, and many of our favorite retailers were forced to move their storefronts at least partially online. If you’ve decided to create a new ecommerce site, but you’re not a developer, don’t have any programming experience, and would rather prefer not having to code at all…you’ve come to the right place. The new StoreBuilder by Nexcess is the right product for you. On the other hand, if you’re just starting with the research into ecommerce sites, the Top 10 Ecommerce Sites in the US might provide you with some insight into good practices for them.
StoreBuilder - What is it?
Back in October 2021, Nexcess announced the launch of the next-gen storebuilder. It is an easy, no-code website builder that allows anyone to build an ecommerce site with no coding required! Unlike Magento or similar software, it’s a fast website builder based on WordPress and WooCommerce. Therefore, if you’re starting your website creation journey, the simpler option will probably be the better one.
WordPress and WooCommerce both come with their pros and cons, and they do require some previous administrative or coding knowledge to work flawlessly. Being the quick website builder that it is, StoreBuilder comes with a predefined set of themes and plugins that were tried and tested by Nexcess developers and optimized to work on our platform. Additionally, the Nexcess platform takes care of core and plugin updates, so you could also rest easy regarding those. As with any Nexcess plan, full site backups are taken daily and kept for 30 days. Just in case something goes wrong, we’d be happy to help you restore the site to its last functional state.
Already Ready for Your New Nexcess StoreBuilder Solution?
Are you on an accelerated schedule and already ready to move forward? If you need to get started with your Nexcess StoreBuilder Solution sooner rather than later, check out these resources:
Unlike standard Nexcess plan setups, this one requires a bit more involvement from your side. Namely, during the setup phase, you’ll be required to answer some questions about the store you’re planning to host. Based on those answers, coresponding plugins will be chosen and installed. These are the steps to follow.
Step #1: Identifying who will be creating the site
Step #2: Describing your experience level with website design
Step #3: Determining what will your store be featuring
Step #4: Specifying your catalog size
Step #5: Cataloging additional content you might already have
Step #6: Reviewing your sample responsive website created with sample products, content, and reviews that you'll be able to customize fully
Step #7: Shopping, Now Shopping!
The StoreBuilder plan comes prepackaged with premium themes that work with an easy-to-use interface to ensure maximum speed for your new site. The StoreBuilder interface is a modified WordPress dashboard that’s simplified but still allows full access to customization relevant sections. It should also prevent some advanced tampering with sections that would cause advanced issues with the site. Of course, advanced issues might require some coding experience to resolve, but we’ve taken precautions to keep this an entirely no-code website builder.
Standard default WordPress themes are included should you wish to use them, but we’ve also added the Kadence themes and Astra themes offer some additional functionalities. Of course, these are just prepackaged in the StoreBuilder but don’t prevent you from adding any other ones, should you wish to.
Once you’ve chosen the theme that suits your needs the best, you can dive into page creation and customization. For example, when modifying the header of the page, you can add multiple navigations (cart, checkout, home, etc.), logo for your website, buttons for the social networks you might be present on, and many more:
Page Layout section will allow you to control the width and height of separate sections of the pages, such as sidebars and the main content placing:
In general, you can have many different pages built within a single WordPress installation, but since you’re building an ecommerce site, there will be some basic ones that you will most likely need. Such as Home page, shop, checkout page, about us, contact us page, and similar:
For example, to add a contact page, you’d click on the “Add New” button within pages. A new blank page would open, allowing you to use the Kadence blocks to create a new page. Opening the “Design Library” will provide multiple blocks you might need:
In this case, I chose the “Let’s connect” block and a basic contact form with a map location:
Along with the standard WordPress appearance customizations, Kadence themes allow additional addons and layouts to be added to the site that would let you personalize the new website more. These come at no extra cost, as the license is already included in the plan. And the best part? It’s still an entirely no-code website builder!
Some plugins will be preinstalled when creating a new StoreBuilder plan, based on your answers during the plan creation process. These are some of them:
In addition to these, the Nexcess plugin is also installed and available. Furthermore, it allows you to install additional plugins included in the hosting plan:
The Nexcess plugin includes a full-page caching feature that can be accessed through the Nexcess dashboard:
Unlike other hosting plans, StoreBuilder by Nexcess comes with preloaded products:
If you’re a beginner in the field, these can be useful and used as a template for your actual products. They can be modified to include actual images, descriptions, and prices, or deleted entirely, should you wish to start from scratch:
Once the site is live, the Analytics section will collect data on sales made and will provide statistics regarding them. The Settings section is the place you’d go to set up shipping and payment options, as well as email options. The Payments section within settings will allow you to define the payment options you’re accepting and set up Stripe which is set as the default payment gateway. If you’d like to use another payment gateway, you’ll be able to install it.
StoreBuilder by Nexcess allows you to build the website on a temporary domain name. This will enable you to create and test out a store without having it indexed by search engines during the development stage. Once the store is ready to go live, you’ll need a domain name your new site will be using. Once you have your name chosen, you’ll need to check if the domain is available. The name you’ve chosen should be available on social media sites, as well (you can manually search for your desired domain name on these sites) in case you would like to create supporting social media accounts. Your chosen domain name should not be trademarked with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Your domain registrar will have instructions on configuring your name servers. Look through their documentation to find out how to update your name servers and set them to the Nexcess nameservers:
It may take up to 48 hours to update across the internet. However, once the nameservers have been updated (you can check them with our Global DNS Checker) you can now use the “Go Live” option in the SiteBuilder dashboard to complete the domain name change:
Once your new store is live, the built-in performance monitor will allow you to review any plugins or sections that might be causing any significant slowness with your site’s behavior.
StoreBuilder is a fairly new product by Nexcess, so our knowledge base and help sections are still a work in progress. However, we’ve collected some StoreBuilder Frequently Asked Questions and continue assisting clients in their site’s day-to-day activities and potential snags along their ecommerce journey.
If you need any assistance with the above-mentioned, don't hesitate to reach out. For 24-hour assistance any day of the year, Nexcess customers can contact our support team by email or through your Client Portal.
